Volleyball Team Upsets Lamar In Five Game Match

LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese State's volleyball team upset East Division leader Lamar here Tuesday night with a thrilling five game 3-2 victory by the scores of 20-30, 31-29, 27-30, 30-28, 15-13.

The victory kept the Cowgirls' home winning streak alive at 6-0 and snapped Lamar's 14 match winning streak.

Lamar took an early 2-1 game lead before the Cowgirls tied the match at two games apiece with a 30-28 fourth game victory to send the match to a fifth and deciding game.

In the fifth game, McNeese took an early 3-1 lead on two Lamar errors and two of Alyson Jones' 20 kills in the match. McNeese extended its lead to 9-4 on kills by Chanel Tyler and Lindsey Petzold.

Lamar then scored five straight points to tie the game at nine all. Tyler gave the Cowgirls a 10-9 lead on the next rally and Sarah Cartie's ace extended the Cowgirl lead to 11-9. After a Kaci Brewer kill, McNeese scored two points on a Lindsay Brooks kill and a Lamar error for a 13-10 lead.

After a McNeese error put the score at 13-11, Jones put down another kill for a 14-11 McNeese lead. Lamar then scored back to back points to cut the lead to 14-13. Jones ended the match on a kill for the Cowgirl victory.

Chanel Tyler Led All Players With Career High 23 Kills


Tyler led all players with a match and a career high 23 kills. Also collecting double figure kills for the Cowgirls was Jennifer Cook with 12 and Lindsay Brooks with 11. Petzold became McNeese State's career block assist during the second game of the match with her 283rd career block assists. Petzold would end the match with five block assists.

Setter Sarah Cartie led all players with 55 assists and both libero's, McNeese's Jessica Strama and Lamar's Andrea Hamilton tied for a match high 26 digs.

Lamar was led by Kaci Brewer's 15 kills. Also collecting double digit kills for the Cardinals was Molli Abel with 14, Destiny Mason with 12 and Meagan Adams with 10.

The win improves the Cowgirls overall record to 13-11 overall and 7-3 in the SLC. Lamar falls to 18-8 on the year and 9-1 in the SLC.
