Volleyball Defeats Texas-Arlington In Straight Sets To Remain Undefeated At Home

LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese State's volleyball team picked up a key Southland Conference win here Friday night with a straight set (30-28, 30-28, 30-28) victory over second place Texas-Arlington to improve to 11-11 overall and 5-3 in league play. The Cowgirls also remained undefeated at 4-0 at home with the win.

The Cowgirls took the early lead in the first game but Texas-Arlington tied the game at six all on a Ellen Murray kill. UTA extended its lead to 10-17 on a Bianca Sauls kill. McNeese made a comeback behind the service of Sarah Cartie and the offensive out put of Alyson Jones and Chanel Tyler. Mcneese tied the game at 28 all on a Jones kill and took a 29-28 lead on a UTA error. A ball handling error by UTA gave the Cowgirls a 30-28 game one victory.

The second game began like the first with the Cowgirls taking the early lead. McNeese held a 5-2 lead but allowed UTA to tie the game at five all on a hitting error. Trailing 8 -13, McNeese outscored UTA 5-0 to tie the game 13-13 on a Jones kill. The game went back and forth from that point on until Lindsay Brooks gave McNeese the lead for good with a kill to take a 22-21 lead. McNeese closed out the game on a UTA service error.

In the final game of the match, McNeese held a 15-9 lead on a ball handling error was called. McNeese extended its lead to 28-21 on a Brooks kill. UTA then outscored the Cowgirls 7-1 to pull to within one point at 29-28. Jones closed out the game and the match with her match high 17th kill.

Tyler recorded a double-double on the night with 12 kills and 13 digs. Brooks was credited with eight kills and 13 digs. Lindsey Petzold moved closer to becoming McNeese's all-time career block assist leader with five. She now has a career total of 279 and needs four to break the record.

Libero Jessica Strama led all players with 20 digs and setter Sarah Cartie led all player with a match high 42 assists.

McNeese concludes parents weekend with a 3 p.m. match against Texas State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
