Volleyball Team Defeats Southeastern La. In Straight Sets
Oct. 12, 2007 LAKE CHARLES-- McNeese State's volleyball team got back into the win column here Friday night with a straight set Southland Conference victory (30-13, 30-21, 30-23) over Southeastern La. The Cowgirls improved to 9-11 overall and 3-3 in league play and remained undefeated at home at 2-0. McNeese started off slow in the opening game of the match and held a 8-6 lead after a kill by Alyson Jones. Setter Sarah Cartie extended the Cowgirls' lead by serving for nine consecutive points to extend the Cowgirl lead to 17-6. McNeese then held a 20-9 lead on a Southeastern La. service error. The Cowgirls went on two more scoring streaks behind the serving of Jessica Strama to give McNeese a 26-12 lead and another Cartie serving streak for a 29-13 lead. Jones ended the game on a kill. McNeese fell behind in the second game but tied the game 4-4 on a Southeastern La. attacking error. Chanel Tyler then served for the next four Cowgirl points to take a 7-5 lead. Southeastern La. would get as close as 11-10 on a McNeese service error. Tyler helped extend the Cowgirl lead to 22-12 and Strama served for five consecutive points to give McNeese a 27-16 lead. With a 29-21 lead, Lindsay Brooks closed out the game with a kill. In the third and deciding game, the lead changed 10 times and McNeese took the lead for good on a Tyler kill to give the Cowgirls a 24-21 lead. From this point on, McNeese outscored Southeastern La. 6-2 to take the game and the match. Jones led all players with a match high 16 kills. Three Cowgirls recorded double figure digs with Strama collecting 18. Also collecting double figure digs was Tyler with 17 and Brooks with 11. Cartie led all players with 24 assists. The loss dropped Southeastern La. to 8-9 overall and 0-6 in league play. McNeese will host Nicholls State at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Cowgirls will be looking to avenge a straight set loss they suffered to the Colonels in Thibodaux on Sept. 22. |
