Volleyball Team Defeats Elon At Illinois-Chicago Tournament
Sept. 7, 2007 CHICAGO, Illinois-- McNeese State's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over Elon here Friday afternoon at the Illinois-Chicago Tournament to improve to 3-4 on the season. McNeese jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening game of the match on two Elon errors and a kill by Jennifer Cook. Elon cut the Cowgirl lead to 3-2 on a kill by Sarah Schermerhorn. McNeese then outscored Elon 12-7 to take a 15-9 lead then held a 23-18 lead on a kill by Lindsay Brooks. McNeese closed out the game with five of the Cowgirls' final seven points being scored by Cook. In the second game, McNeese took a 1-0 lead on a kill by Ayshin Vasser but gave up two points to fall behind 2-1. The Cowgirls retook the lead 5-3 behind the serving of Deanna Sanchez. After a 7-7 tie, McNeese never trailed and went on to win the game 30-17 to take a 2-0 lead. McNeese couldn't close out the match in a close third game as they fell 30-28 but came back in the fourth game to win the game 30-26 and the match. After an early 2-2 tie, the Cowgirls took the lead for good on a Brooks kill and never looked back. The Cowgirls extended their lead to 18-10 on another Brooks kill and it would be Brooks to end the game and the match with her match high 15th kill. Brooks was also credited with 17 digs in the match. Alyson Jones added 14 kills and Lindsey Petzold contributed to the win with 10 kills. Vasser led the Cowgirls with a .529 hitting percent on nine kills, 17 attacks and no errors. Jessica Strama led McNeese with 31 digs and setter Sarah Cartie led all players with 38 assists. McNeese will face Illinois-Chicago at 1:30 and North Dakota at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. |
