Softball Team Travels To Southern Tuesday

March 17, 2008

McNeese State's softball team will travel to Baton Rouge today to face Southern University in a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. This will be the third and fourth meetings between the two teams this season. Both teams defeated each other during the Cowgirl Classic in February. McNeese won the first game 8-2 before falling 10-9.

The Cowgirls (8-24) are coming off a Southland Conference series home loss to Stephen F. Austin where the Cowgirls won the opening game of the series 2-1 then dropped the next two 8-1 and 9-6.

Senior Jenny Clay continues to lead the Cowgirls with a .316 batting average and a .481 slugging percent. Clay is also tied for a team high 20 runs scored, seven doubles and two home runs.

Freshman outfielder Lindsey Langner is the only other Cowgirls hitting above .300 at .313. Langner leads the team with 31 hits and has a .925 fielding percent.

Pitcher/First Baseman Michelle LaVoie

Junior pitcher/first baseman Michelle LaVoie leads the team with 21 RBI's to go along with 21 hits and is fourth on the team with a .280 batting average. LaVoie leads the pitching staff with six victories, 32 strikeouts and 90.0 innings pitched.

Southern (17-11) enters the doubleheader after picking up its first sweep of the season with three victories over Prairie View on the weekend.
