Cowgirls Split SLC Doubleheader With Southeastern La.

LAKE CHARLES--McNeese State's softball team split a Southland Conference doubleheader with Southeastern La. here Saturday, dropping the opener by a 1-0 score and winning the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

Southeastern Louisiana's Rachel Ray threw a one-hitter, struck out seven and walked two for the game one victory. The Lions scored the lone run of the game in the sixth inning on two hits. Kelly Lyman led the nning off with a double. A two out single by Nicole Schoenberger scored pinch runner Bailey Zievert for the game winning run.

After a strikeout by Michelle LaVoie in the in the bottom half of the inning, Tiffany Ritchie broke up Ray's no-hitter with a double. Lindsey Langner walked and represented the go ahead run but the Cowgirls failed to score a run. Pinch hitter Katie Shumaker struck out and Langner was forced out at second to end the Cowgirls' threat.

Bethany Stefinsky took the complete game loss for the Cowgirls, falling to 3-9 on the year. Stefinsky struck out seven and gave up six hits.

The Cowgirls bounced back in the nightcap to take the mercy-rule victory. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, McNeese took a 2-1 lead in the second on a two RBI home run by Molly Guidry. The homer gave Guidry a team high six homerun's on the year. The Cowgirls added two more runs in the third on a RBI triple by Holly Long that scored Jenny Clay who advanced to first on a walk. Long scored on an error to give the Cowgirls a 4-1 lead. McNeese blew the game open in the sixth inning with five runs six hits and one Southeastern La. error.

After a pop out to short by Langner, Liz Morvant and Clay singled. A two RBI pinch hit by Shumaker gave the Cowgirls a 6-1 lead. Megan Beard's two RBI homerun extended the Cowgirls lead to 8-1 and the game ended on a BRI single by Whitney Corbello to give the Cowgirls a 9-1 win.

LaVoie earned her ninth victory of the season to improve to 9-12 overall. LaVoie gave up four hits and struck out four and walked four.

Jenna Yoder took the loss for the Lady Lions, falling to 9-7. Yoder gave up four earned runs, one strike out and walked two in three innings pitched.

The series will conclude with the rubber game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
