Chris Malveaux enters his fourth season as the Cowgirls' head coach with a 85-97 career record. He has guided the Cowgirls to three twenty win season and two thirty win seasons (2005, 2007) and the Southland Conference Tournament in his first three seasons as head coach, winning the Southland Conference Tournament in 2005 and earning a NCAA bid that same season. Last season, McNeese posted its second 30 win season under Malveaux with a 30-32 record and advanced to the SLC Tournament for the third consecutive season under his direction. In his first season as head coach (2005), he was one of a few coaches to lead their team to the NCAA Tournament in their first season as head coach. The 2005 season turned out to be a year every coach dreams about. The season began with a 9-24 start and the Cowgirls turned things around to produce a 24-9 record in their last 33 games. The last three weeks of the season were unbelievable for Malveaux. McNeese was in a must win situation heading into a SLC series against Nicholls State to even have a chance of making the SLC Tournament. The Cowgirls won two out of three games. McNeese's next task was to sweep Southeastern La. to earn the sixth and final spot of the SLC Tournament. They did that in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 come from behind victory in game two and then won the final game of the series 1-0 to clinch the tournament's final spot. Noone could have ever predicted what happened at the Southland Conference Tournament that year. McNeese dropped the first game 5-0 to regular season champion and top seed Texas-San Antonio. McNeese then went on to win its next five games including victories over Texas-Arlington and Texas State to make it to the final day of the tournament. The storybook season continued as the Cowgirls won three games on the final day of the tournament. McNeese eliminated Texas-San Antonio and then capped the weekend off by defeating Sam Houston State twice to win the SLC Tournament and the right to represent the league in the NCAA Tournament, Prior to being elevated to head coach, Malveaux was a Cowgirl assistant for three years. As an assistant, Malveaux was involved in all aspects of the program from on field coaching, recruiting and field maintenance. Prior to coming to McNeese, Malveaux was a manager for the Texas A&M softball team and was a summer league coach. During the 2000 and 2001 season he served as assistant coach for the Texas Comets summer league team. The Houston, Texas native is a 2001 Texas A&M graduate. |
