MOBILE, Alabama-- McNeese State's women's golf team is in sixth place with a 313 after the first round of the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational here Monday. East Tennessee State leads the 18 team tournament field with a 301 followed by Southern Miss (308). Lamar and Belmont University are both tied for third at 311 and Jacksonville State is at 312.

"The wind was the biggest factor here today. The playing conditions were similar to Corpus Christi with winds gusting to 30 mph at times," said head coach Mike Fluty. "The greens had quick downhill slopes with subtle breaks."

Lacy McKinley, Mandi Hamilton and Maggie Welch all completed the first round in the Top 20. McKinley is in an 11th place tie with a 76 and Hamilton and Welch are both tied for 18th place with 77's. Other Cowgirl scores have Jennifer Herrmann tied for 63rd with a 83 and Jacy Reynolds is tied for 90th place with a 87. Randi Fisher, who playing as an individual is in 70th place with a first round 84.

Southern Miss' Virginia Espejo, East Tennessee State Universities Natalia Giraldo and Middle Tennessee's Jamey Dillard are all tied for the individual lead with a one over par 73.

"Our kids made good decisions today. Our short putting was better and they converted par putts and made birdie putts. Their concentration was good as they rebounded from errant shots."

The tournament will conclude with 18 holes today that has a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. "We need to stay focused on what we're doing and not what everyone else is doing. We need to make good solid decisions today. Each outing we are getting better and are making progress."
