June 20, 2008
McNeese State Basketball Head Coach Dave Simmons and his coaching staff will be holding their second annual team camp Friday and Saturday on the McNeese campus. The action on Friday is slated to begin at 5 p.m. Friday evening and last until 9 p.m. that night. The camp starts back up on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and extends throughout the day before concluding at 6 p.m. in the evening. "This is our second year holding this camp," said Simmons "our goal is to grow and add more teams every year" The camp has done just that, growing this year to 26 teams from the local area as well as from Texas that will feature strong competition. The two day event will feature 15 teams that participated in their respective state playoff tournaments the previous season as well as seven traveling summer league teams made up of high school players. "This camp serves a good purpose for the coaches and players to gain experience for the upcoming year." said Simmons, "it helps teams get ready for the 2008-09 season." All games will consist of two 16 minute halves with a five minute halftime. Teams participating in the camp will play a total of four games during the two day event. Friday night will feature games being played in Memorial Gym and the recreational complex on the McNeese Campus. Two courts will be utilized Friday night with two games being played simultaneously. Four games will be played at the same time during the entire day Saturday. The teams entered in the camp include local schools such as Barbe, Sulphur, Hamilton Christian and Westlake as well as Lafayette, the defending state champion in 5A. Teams from Texas will be represented with high school teams Silsbee, Livingston and Kountze as well as traveling teams All 4 Sports, Beaumont Hoopstars and the Houston Fever.
