Cowboys drop exhibition game to LSU-Shreveport 86-80

LSU-Shreveport put five players in double figures and the Pilots claimed an 86-80 exhibition basketball game victory over McNeese State's Cowboys here Wednesday.

The Cowboys held a 34-33 halftime lead but the Pilots led for most of the second half, holding as much as an 11 point lead early in the second half.

Jamon Morris produced a double double for the Pilots, a member of the NAIA. He had a game high 12 rebounds and added 20 points. Also scoring in double figures for LSU-S were Jared Stevenson with 17 and Josh Porter, J'Quincy Jones and Travis Cash all with 13 points.

The Cowboys, who will open their regular season on the road against Texas A&M on Nov. 9, had the game's leading scorer in Jarvis Bradley who produced 26 points.

The only other double figure scorer for McNeese was John Pichon with 10 points.

McNeese outshot LSU-S from the floor, making 49 percent of its shots, but the Cowboys faultered at the free throw line, connecting on only 12 of 21 for a 57 percentage.

The Pilots held a 42-38 edge in rebounds.

The Cowboys got to within two points of LSU-S at 79-77 on a pair of free throws by John Ford with 1:44 left, but the Pilots made the next four points, all on free throws. All seven of the LSU-S final points came at the free throw line.

Cowboy head coach Dave Simmons said following the game that his team just got beat.

He said that they wanted to try a lot of different combinations on the floor and that they did. They played 14 of the 16 players that were on the bench.

Eleven of those players got into the scoring column. Pichon and Aldryan Wardell led the Cowboys in rebounding with eight each while Bradley had seven.

Among the newcomers to the Cowboys team, Diego Kapelan scored eight points and C. J. Collins had seven.
