David Dumars

Player Profile

High School:
Natchitoches-Central

Last College:
Louisiana-Monroe '80

Position:
Assistant Coach

Birthdate:
01/21/1957

David Dumars has been the one constant on the McNeese State coaching staff in the 2000s. He is in his seventh season as an assistant coach, now working under his third head coach.

In this time he has helped the Cowboys win two league titles and participate in both the NCAA and the NIT post season tournaments.

A football coach for all of his collegiate career prior to joining McNeese, Coach Dumars has learned fast and has become a valuable hand on the Cowboy staff both as a recruiter and as an on-floor coach. He served 11 seasons as an assistant football coach at Southeast Missouri State before joining the Cowboys.

Coach Dumars played basketball in high school, coached it in high school and is the older brother of former McNeese State all-American and all-pro Joe Dumars, who is now president of the Detroit Pistons.

The 48 year old coach (born Jan. 21, 1957) works with the Cowboy post players and is one of the team's top recruiters.

The McNeese coach is a former professional football player, having played for the New York Jets in the NFL, for Montreal in the CFL and for Denver and Birmingham in the USFL. Two years running he was an all-pro selection as a strong safety for Denver, leading the league in interceptions with eight and a return average of 46 yards.

A 1980 graduate of Louisiana-Monroe, Coach Dumars began his coaching career at Tallulah (LA) High in 1987 and then spent 11 seasons as the defensive backfield coach at Southeast Missouri State.

He and his wife Marsha have two children - Davique and LaTasha.
