May 17, 2008

Box Score

BEAUMONT, TX - McNeese State closed out its 2008 baseball season here Saturday afternoon by absorbing a 2-1 setback at the hands of Lamar University.

Once again the Cowboys took an early lead over the Cardinals, going up 1-0 after one inning, but Lamar came back with single runs in the third and seventh frames to win the game and complete a three game series shutout.

The Cowboys closed their first season with Terry Burrows as head coach at 13-42 and 7-23 in Southland Conference games. Lamar, which won the eastern division title in the SLC race, will take a 32-21 (20-10 SLC) mark into the league playoffs which begin later this week.

Michael Robbins hurled seven innings of nine hit, two run ball and took the pitching loss for the Cowboys. He struckout five batters with his record going to 1-4.

Taylor McInnis, the fourth of six Lamar pitchers, got the win. He hurled one inning of one hit ball and recorded his first decision of the season.

Lamar scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on an infield ground out by Travis Dunson.

McNeese had opened the scoring in the first inning when Shon Landry doubled in Taylor Freeman who had also doubled.

The Cowboys only had five hits in the game and no player got more than one.
