Cowboys drop second game of series 10-2 to Bearkats
April 19, 2008
By Josh Brown McNeese SID Intern Huntsville, TX- The Sam Houston Bearkats used the strength of three homeruns to beat the McNeese Cowboys by a score of 10-2 here on Saturday afternoon to take game two of the Southland Conference series between the teams. The final game of the conference series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 PM. The Cowboys fall to 10-28 on the year overall, 5-12 in SLC play while the Bearkats improved to 24-12 overall with a 11-6 record in SLC games. The starters for each team got the decision this time, as Scott Holstein of the Cowboys was tagged with the loss to fall to 1-5 on the year. Dallas Gallant improved to 4-2 on the year for the Bearkats. Similar to game 1, the Cowboys jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the game as Taylor Freeman was walked in his first trip to the plate. Keith Patnode then hit a shot over the center fielders' head for a double to straight away center field to score Freeman and put the Cowboys up 1-0. The lead would not last however, as the Bearkats responded with two unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning as Holstein walked two straight batters to put runners on first and second. Ryan Weber then hit a ball weakly towards third base and, as Holstein attempted to throw the runner out, ended up throwing the ball away. The error allowed the two runners to score on a two base error and allowed Weber to reach third on a single and an error to put the Bearkats up 2-1. The Bearkats added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 4-1 before the Bearkats really broke the game open. In the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and one runner on base due to an error, Ryan Trevino hit a homerun off the scoreboard to put Sam Houston up 6-1. Bobby Verbick followed up in the next at bat with a homerun over the scoreboard in left field to put the score at 7-1 and chase Holstein from the game. Holstein game up seven runs on six hits in the game, with only two of the runs earned due to Cowboy errors. He walked four Sam Houston batters in the game while striking out one. Todd Fontenot came on in relief and pitched two and one-third innings while Matt Click pitched the last two innings for the Cowboys. The Bearkats added one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach at 10-1. The Cowboys were only able to muster one more run, as Freeman singled to right field, advanced to second when Nick Eubanks was hit by a pitch, and advanced to third on a Patnode single to load the bases with only one out. Freeman then scored on a fielders' choice by Justin Beitzel to complete the scoring at 10-2. The Cowboys could not muster any more runs as the final two batters of the inning went down on strike outs to end the threat. Patnode led the Cowboys with two hits on the afternoon. Freeman registered one hit, going 1-for-1 on the day as the Bearkats pitched around him for most of the game, recording three walks in his first three at bats. Sam Merrill, Shon Landry, Beitzel, Channing Kile and Mace Hebert each recorded one hit in the game. Patnode and Beitzel had the only RBI for the Cowboys with one apiece. The Cowboys complete the three game SLC series against Sam Houston on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1 PM. Ryan Frantz is scheduled to start for the Cowboys against Guillaume Duguay of the Bearkats.
