CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - McNeese State's men produced a fifth place effort but a forced injury put standout Tinette Burger out of the women's race for which the Cowgirls had no team finish here Saturday during the running of the Southland Conference cross country championship meet.

The fifth place finish by the Cowboys meant a five place improvement over last year's showing. Mark Hoey led the team with a 25:37 clocking over 8K for 13th place.

In the women's race, Burger was knocked down during the race when she was running in the top 10. She suffered an injury which forced her out of the event.

Amy Guinn led the Cowgirls with a 15th place showing and a season best clocking of 22:13.2 for the 6K. "It's just too bad that Tinette got knocked down. She tweaked a hamstring and was unable to finish," said McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy.

"Still, I thought that we had a good meet. The men showed a lot of improvement over last year and the women would have also moved up from a year ago had we had had the required five finishers."

Lamar won the men's title with 37 points followed by TAM-Corpus Christi with 44, UTA 73, SFA 116, McNeese 126, UTSA 172, Sam Houston 209, Texas State 221, SE Louisiana 251, Central Arkansas 269, Northwestern State 301 and Nicholls State 330.

TAM-Corpus won the women's championship with 48 points and was followed by Lamar with 52, SFA 98, Texas State 111, UTA 112, Central Arkansas 175, Sam Houston State 203, UTSA 207, Nicholls State 245, SE Louisiana 261 and Northwestern State 296.

Shadrack Songok of TAM-Corpus won the men's race in 24:05. Other finishes for the Cowboys had Stephen Scullion in 17th place at 25:51, Alasdair Russell was 31st nd at 26:50, Johnathan Koenck was 36th at 26:56, Kenneth Pierce ran 49th at 27:29, Ryan Barrow was 51st at 27:30 and Matt Fontenot was 60th at 28:14.

Taking the women'stitle was Clerc Koenck of Lamar with a 20:48.1 timing. Other finishes for the Cowgirls had Carly Thurman 63rd at 24:55.2, Jessica Gonzales-Pons 76th at 27:31 and Anna Caffery 79th at 28:52.7.

Next up for both the Cowboys and the Cowgirls will be the NCAA regionals.
