Mark Hoey and Amy Guinn claimed first places for McNeese State during the running of the Northwestern State cross country meet on Monday.

Hoey won the men's 8K run with a clocking of 26:28.27 and led the Cowboys to the team victory while Guinn took the women's 5K race in 19:51.96.

The Cowgirls did not field enough runners to qualify for the team championship. Tinette Burger, who had won her first two races this season, did not participate because of a leg injury.

The Cowboys scored 25 points to outdistance the eight team field in the meet that was run on the Northwestern State golf course.

Louisiana Tech was second with 65 points, Grambling scored 87, Centenary 94, Louisiana-Lafayette 113, Northwestern State 138, East Texas Baptist 244 and Louisiana College 255.

Louisiana-Lafayette won the women's team title with 27 points while Grambling had 60, Centenary 67 and East Texas Baptist 158.

""I thought that we had a good meet," McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy said. "We ran smart and we grouped together."

The Cowboys had three finish in the top five and five in the top 10.

Alasdair Russell was fourth with a 27:11.74 clocking, Stephen Scullion was fifth at 27:21.20, Jordan Neil was sixth at 27:28.06 and Ryan Barrow placed ninth with a 27:53.81 effort.

Johnathan Koenck ran 12th for the Cowboys (28:09.81), Kenny Pierce was 16th (28:23.690) and Matt Fontenot was 26th (29:29.16).

Guinn was the only Cowgirl in the top 10 for the women as she won the first collegiate race of her career. Carly Thurman placed 18th at 22:46.07, Jennifer LaValley was 31st at 24:17.15 and Anna Caffery was 37th at 25:30.24 .

It was the third straight race for a Cowgirl to claim the individual title in the women's division. Burger had won the first two events.

This was also the second win for Hoey.
