McNeese Cowboy golf team will host Moe O'Brien Memorial tournament beginning Sunday

Sept. 20, 2007

McNeese State's golf and cross country teams will be in action this weekend, the men's golf team to host its annual Moe O'Brien memorial tournament at Gray Plantation.

The golf tournament runs Sunday through Tuesday with play commencing at 8:30 a.m. each day.

The cross country team - men and women - will run in the LSU meet on Saturday in Baton Rouge. The women will run a 6K beginning at 9 a.m. and the men will run 8K starting at 9:45 a.m.

The field for this year's Moe O'Brien tournament includes host McNeese, Centenary, Nicholls State and Central Arkansas.

The Cowboys are the defending champions while senior Sigmundur Masson won the individual title last year.

Joining Masson on the McNeese team this week will be Brandon Eaton, Kyle Collins, Cory Vincent and David Wiggins. Valgier Thomasson will participate as an individual for the Cowboys.

Eaton was the team leader in McNeese's season opener last week, posting a tie for 22nd in the Troy Invitational.

The McNeese cross country team is coming off an impressive showing in the Louisiana Tech Invitational. The school had the top two individual finishes in the meet, Mark Hoey winning the men's race and Tinette Burger taking the women's. Burger was named the Southland Conference women's cross country runner of the week for her performance.

Mark Hoey won last week's meet at Louisiana Tech.

Joining Hoey on the men's team for Saturday's race will be Ryan Barrow, Matt Fontenot, Johnathon Koenck, Kenneth Pierce and Alasdair Russell.

The women's team will be filled out by Anna Caffery, Amy Guinn, Jennifer LaValley and Carly Thurman.
