Michael Dyer named LSWA track newcomer of the year

Seven McNeese State athletes were named as members of the 2008 all-Louisiana collegiate track and field team by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

One - middle distance runner Michael Dyer - was named the men's newcomer of the year.

Dyer, who participated as a graduate student and will have one more year of eligibility, turned in a McNeese best and finished fourth in the Southland Conference championship meet with a 1:51.97 effort in the 800 meters this past season.

Cowboys and Cowgirls amed as members of the LSWA team were Stephen Scullion in the steeplechase, John Jamail in the shot put, Freddie Hannie in the hammer throw, Darrick Brown in the long jump, James Overbo in the pole vault and Amy Guinn in the 1500 meters.

Scullion posted a 9:12.55 best in the steeplechase, Jamail went 56-2 3/4 in the shot, Hannie 193-3 in the hammer, Brown 25-0 3/4 in the long jump, Overbo 15-1 in the pole vault and Guinn 4:41.71 in the women's 1500 meters.

Positions on the team were determined by top performances in events during the year.

RACING IN EUROPE

McNeese State distance runners Neil Jordan and Michael Dyer are continuing to produce top efforts in races in Europe this summer.

Participating in the IMC Grand Prix in England on Saturday, Dyer finished second in the 800 meters with a 1:52.40 clocking and Jordan ran seventh in the 1500 meters at 3:49.21.
