Ways to Make the Best Use of Your Time
Listed below are different strategies you might adopt to use your time most efficiently.
1. Use short and long-term schedules.
2. Set daily priorities and focus on top-priority items one at a time.
3. Do not over schedule, if you are unable to get your work done or feel stressed while trying to complete it, you may have planned too many activities.
4. Plan your day so you are studying when you are most alert and attentive.
5. Use the five-to ten-minute blocks of time you have throughout each day to accomplish a task (e.g., pay a bill, or review your notes) or make progress on a larger project.
6. Use travel time efficiently and productively. For example, if you are an aural learner and tape lectures, you might listen to these tapes when you are commuting to school or traveling to competitions with your team.
7. Make sure your notes and study materials are organized and easily accessible.
8. Begin projects with the intention of completing them. If you are unable to complete the project, make a note as to your progress so you do not have to start from the beginning.
9. Say "no" to requests that interfere with your accomplishing your goals, such as when friends ask you out to a party and you have to finish your political science paper.
10. Study where you are not likely to be interrupted or distracted, such as in the library.
11. Complete your low-priority tasks when you are least alert and attentive.
12. Videotape your favorite TV shows s you can watch them at a later time and fast-forward through the commercials.
13. Use relaxation and enjoyable activities (e.g., watching TV, going out) as rewards for accomplishing your tasks.
14. When going someplace, call ahead for direction, reservations, and hours of operation or any other information that will make your trip more efficient.
15. Whenever possible, handle business over the phone or through the internet.
16. Lean to stay focused and attentive so you do not have to repeat tasks.
17. Run errands efficiently--do not make multiple or special trips. Instead tack errands onto trips that are already planned, or try to do as many as possible when they are located in the same part of town or your campus.
18. Prepare the night before for the next day. For example, you might set out your clothes, pack you lunch, or get your notebooks and class materials in order.
